Many ask or wonder why people during this time of the year wish people “Happy Holidays.” Yes, here in the US, it is fairly safe to say that most people celebrate Christmas, so that it may seem the natural response. But few people realize that between November 1st and January 15th, there are approximately 50 different holidays in the more major religions, with many sharing the same dates or overlapping one another. Hence, for this reason, while I celebrate Christmas at this time of the year, countless people may not. As you can see, with 50 different religious holidays in a two and half month period, it is obvious that undoubtedly I will come across those who may celebrate the other holidays besides Christmas.
So, do not be offended when someone tells you or you hear someone say “Happy Holidays” and not “Merry Christmas,” they are simply acknowledging the many different religions that have and do celebrate this time of the year. So, with that, I wish every one of you Happy Holidays, and may whatever occasion you celebrate, may you and your family stay safe and enjoy the company of one another.
